Page Links To or Points To – WordPress Plugin

February 3, 2009 by

I came across a cool plugin that is really easy to use when you want something in your menu or navigation to point to another URL instead of a page within your site.

Page Links To allows you to point WordPress pages or posts to a URL of your choosing. Good for setting up navigational links to non-WP sections of your site or to off-site resources.

After installing and activating your plugin, just go to the page you want to edit and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Just fill out the form show below to tell it where you want that page to point.

Get the Page Links To Plugin here.  Let me know if this helps with your WordPress Blog.

Using Voice Recognition or Speech Recognition Software for Blogging in WordPress

Most people speak over 120 words per minute but type less than 40 words per minute. What if you could speak your blog, instead of typing it. Think about using speech recognition or voice recognition software to make blogging easier. Once your software has been set up and trained to recognize your voice patterns, you can use it to dictate your blog posts. It learns to recognize your voice instantly and continually improves the more you use it.  This can dramatically speed up the time it takes to get new posts up. Speech recognition software can type up to 160 WPM (words per minute) with 99% accuracy. Not too shabby, so give it a try.

Screen Capture and Making Tutorials for WordPress

There are many times that you may want to take a screenshot of something to put in your WordPress blog or on your website. You may also want to find a way to make short tutorials, whereby you can record video of onscreen action, showing your users exactly what you’re doing. Well, I’ve found a great tool for doing just that. It’s called Jing. Jing is a free application that allows you to make screen captures or even video tutorials in 5 minute increments. Your captures or videos can be saved to  your local hard drive or uploaded to Screencast.com. This software is made by TechSmith…the makers of Camtasia Studio. I love this application and encourage you to try it out to see for yourself.

  • JingProject.com – Free software that adds visuals to your online conversations.
  • Screencast.com – a TechSmith solution for business and academic professionals looking to manage and share videos, images, documents, or anything else online.

How to Keep Your Video Camera Steady – Even When You Are Moving

All to often we see videos that people make that would be pretty good videos, but the camera is so shaky it makes us drunk just to watch it. Steadicams (or camera stabilizers) are attachments used to capture smooth looking video even when the camera and camera operator are in motion. The camera operator may walk (or even jog), move through tight hallways and doorways, and even climb up and down stairs without shaking the camera.

There are professional video stabilizers on the market to remedy this situation…but they ain’t cheap. One is called Steadicam, and starts around $1500. Well, I found a way to make great videos without spending an arm and a leg on a solution to make your camera steady. It’s called Steadycam, and you can make one yourself for under $14.00.  Johnny Chung Lee has a website devoted to showing you exactly what you’ll need to build it, and then shows exactly how to build it for under $14. Johnny does an excellent job and his design is brilliant. If you are not the handyman type, you can purchase the complete Steadycam for $39.95 from Johnny’s site…still a great deal. So check out the Steadycam and start making smooth moving videos today.

Social bookmarking plugin for WordPress

December 14, 2008 by

Learning how to use social media optimization in your WordPress blog can be a key strategy in getting your site the traffic you desire.  I recently came across a good social bookmarking plugin for WordPress. It’s really easy to set up and it’s one that allows your readers to actually help you get bookmarked. The Sociable plugin has so many bookmarking options that it can be overwhelming. Google, Digg, LinkedIn, Technorati, Twitter, Facebook, del.icio.us, and Propeller are just a few of the many choices you have to choose from. Don’t give your readers too many bookmarking options, as it will probably confuse them more than help them.

Below is a screenshot of the bookmarking options:

You can also view it (or use it) at the bottom of this post.

The Sociable plugin is just one of the many tools that WordPress users can add to their blog to help with social bookmarking optimization. Please let me know if you use this tool or find it useful.

WordPress blog designs – professional logo sets you apart

When setting up your WordPress blog, it’s important to get a professional logo for your site. The logo is how people will instantly recognize you, and will be the beginning of your branding.  A homemade logo or text saying yoursite.com is just not going to cut it. A professional logo will set your business apart and let people know that you are a professional business and not just a mom & pop shop.

If you cannot design your own logo, there are many places to get one done quickly and inexpensively. Most designers will give you approximately three unique designs to choose from, then once you pick one they will give you numerous revisions to get the exact colors and look that you desire. It helps the designer if you have some idea of what you would like, and what colors you like.  Once your design is completed, the designer should give you all of the necessary files in different formats, such as PSD, JPG, GIF, PNG or AI. When you are ready to get business cards, stationary or make any other company marketing materials, you’ll have the necessary files that your printer can use.

Deauxmain Group, Inc. charges $300 for logo design, which includes what I discussed above…, up to three unique designs to choose, and revisions to get it just right. All files will be send to you upon completion.

Viewing CSS and code in WordPress

December 3, 2008 by

One of the best tools you can have if you’re using WordPress or any other web application is the Firebug add-on for Firefox.

Firebug integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of development tools at your fingertips while you browse. You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page. You can even edit CSS on anyone’s live site to see what it would look like in a different color….pretty cool. Below is what I did to the Facebook site using the Firebug tool.

I was able to change the color of the Facebook menubar using the Firebug tool. Now, keep in mind that you cannot save it on someone else’s site, but it is fun to play with. The main point that I want to make with this tool is that you can view HTML code, CSS, JavaScript, which makes this tool really helpful when debugging site errors. Below is the code I changed to make the menubar red on Facebook.

View color information on any WordPress page

December 3, 2008 by

This is not so much a WordPress tip, but just a general tip for anyone doing web design. It’s a tip that saves me so much time when it comes to trying to duplicate colors that I like on websites. It’s using The Web Developer extension for Firefox.  This tool has saved my butt many times.

Just one of the cool features is the ability to display the colors used on any web page. Below is a screenshot of the colors used on Google.com.

These are the colors used on Google.com

To view this option after installing The Web Developer extension, open your Firefox browser, then go to a site that you like, then in the browser navigation menu go to: Tools > Web Developer > Information > View Color Information.

This extension has so many more useful tools that I’m not sure what I’d do if I didn’t have it. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t use one of the tools in this extension. Check it out…you’ll be glad you did.

Hide a page or post from navigation in WordPress

December 3, 2008 by

Have you ever wanted to create a page in WordPress, but didn’t want it to show up on the menu?  Well, a client recently wanted me to create a “thank you” page on her WP site. After trying to figure it out on my own, I did some searching on Google and found the perfect tip to handle this.

You’ll have to be confident in editing the header.php page on your WP site.

Go to your WP admin panel then to Design > Theme Editor > then click on header.php in the Theme Files on the right.

Find the code below, which should be approximately 3/4 the way down the page.

<?php wp_list_pages('sort_column=menu_order&depth=1&title_li=&exclude= 30,47,68,102,113'); ?>

Add the page ID's that you want to exclude here: exclude=15,47,68,102,113'); ?>

You can find the page or post ID’s by going to the WP admin panel, then go to Manage page or post.  Mouse over the page or post titles while looking at the status bar at the bottom of your screen. The ID number is the number at the very end of the link that shows. You can view the screenshot below:

There is much more that you can do with this, such as hiding posts in the sidebar navigation, but I’m not going to get into that here. You can see more on this where I initially found the tip that got me out of a bind on the very helpful site http://jarretcade.net. Jared has some great tips.

You can also contact me here if you would like some help on your WordPress site.
